Lake Forest is a city of more than 83,000 residents. Located in the central portion of Orange County, CA, it is bounded by Irvine, CA to the northwest, Laguna Hills, CA to the south, and Mission Viejo, CA to the southeast.
Lake Forest was formed from a portion of the Mexican land grant known as Rancho Canada de Los Alisos (the Valley of the Sycamores). The area came to be known as “El Toro” because of the bulls that roamed the rancho.
In the early 1900s, ownership of the land was transferred to Dwight Whiting, who planted 400 acres of fast-growing eucalyptus trees in response to the California lumber shortage of the time.
In the 1960s, Occidental Petroleum developed a master-planned community around the abundant foliage and added manmade lakes. From this, “Lake Forest” was derived and became the city’s official name upon its incorporation as a city in December 1991. As Lake Forest, the original El Toro territory annexed the master-planned communities of Foothill Ranch and Portola Hills.
